Two days ago, in his New York Times column, Thomas Friedman said as flatly as he sees the world, "the Israeli Peace Movement is dead." To Honor all those, individuals, organizations, friends, academics, reporters, newspapers who have never stopped alerting, reporting, demonstrating, negotiating, risking their lives to end the atrocities of the Occupation, I dedicate this work, my quilt of dispossession. For just the year of 2010, I have taken the first sentence or paragraph from the communiques I have received and month by month, I will let them tell their own story, their own history, their portrait of this time in this place. I have identified the authors, the sources to show the wide breadth of peace activists and organizations trying to get the word out about the daily life of Palestinians almost made impossible by the weight of the occupation. There is another story here as well, the story of the occupier. The number signifies the day; "sw" stands for Shebar Windstone without whose dedication so much of what I do on this site would not be possible. I will return to this posting as I finish assembling each month.
January, 2010
Prologue: January 27, the death of Howard Zinn, historian, social justice teacher, writer, activist: "If we act, in however a small way, we don't have to wait for some grand Utopian future. The future is an infinite succession of presents, and to live now as we think human beings should live, in defiance of all that is bad around us, it itself a marvellous victory." 1. "Gaza Freedom March: 85-Year-Old Holocaust Survivor Ends Fast," by Ellen Davidson
Cairo, January 1--85-year-old Holocaust survivor Hedy Epstein ended her hunger strike today. She had begun the fast to protest the Egyptian's government's refusal to allow the Gaza Freedom March to cross the border into Gaza. "Today is the first day of the new year but also the first day of our struggle to to free Gaza, so let's all struggle to be strong until that day when we can all be together with the people of Gaza and feast together in a new world." (sw)
1. Post by Ali Abunimah
Leaving Cairo, but taking the struggle with me. Today I leave Cairo after four intense days with the Gaza Freedom March. We did not fulfill our goal of reaching Gaza and being with the Palestinian peopl there. To talk about the seige of Gaza in the abstract is one thing, but to actually come to Egypt and find that Gaza is harder to visit then a prison is like a bucket of cold water...but like others, I will take the struggle with me. (sw)
1. "Keffiyeh and Onions," post by Sana Javed
On January 1st, I and 1300 other people will convene in Gaza to demand an end to the Israeli Occupation and we will remember the one year anniversary of the Gaza War, where over 900 Palestinian women and children alone were killed during the Israeli air strikes. Here is my story but more importantly, here is theirs. (sw)

Good evening to all of you who came to mark the first anniversary of the Gaza carnage, and to protest the comfortable complacence which inhabitants if this city and this country exhibit in the face of the slow annihilation which goes on and on in Gaze and throughout Palestine. (Translated by Adam Keller)
8. From “Two States for One People” by Gideon Spiro, sent by Sherry Gorelick
Forty-two years of Occupation have created the de facto State of the Settlers in the Occupied Territories. There is a defense accord between the State of Israel and the State of the Settlers, according to which the settlers indulge their whims and commit crimes under the protective cover of the Israeli army….For the anti-Semites it was the Jew, for the Settlers it is the Palestinian. (Translated from Hebrew for “Occupation Magazine” by George Malent
10. News article from Haaretz by Barak Ravid
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Sunday ordered to construct a fence at a cost of $1.5 billion along two segments of Israel’s border with Egypt, in an attempt to stem the infiltration of migrant workers as well as of terrorist elements into Israel.
11. News article, “Palestinians turn to jobs building settlements they despise,” by Hossam Ezzedine, Jordan Times
Nilin Checkpoint, West Bank—Like most Palestinians, Ismail Harb resents the Israeli settlements that crown the hilltops of the occupied West Bank, but every day he lines up before dawn to help build them.
12. Book Review by Yousef Munayyer, “Jewish Terrorism in Israel”
Muslim groups, the argument goes are more likely to kill in greater numbers and this was due to religious ideology….For these reasons and more, the recently released Jewish Terrorism in Israel by Ami Pedahzur and Arie Perliger is a timely and important contribution to the study of terrorism and the general discussion of extremism in Israel and globally, both historically and contemporarily….The authors both Israeli scholars, were granted un precedented access to Israeli documents about Jewish terrorism…
12. New York Times columnist, David Brooks
“Jews are a famously accomplished group. They make up 0.2 percent of the world population, but 54 percent of the world chess champions, 27 percent of the Nobel physics laureates and 31 percent of the medicine laureates.”
15. UNESCO Urges ‘Malsin’s immediate and unconditional release, from maannews,
Subject: Detention of Ma’an News Agency’s Chief English Editor
Ma’an is editorially independent and pluralistic Palestinian news agency in Bethlem. During the past five years, UNESCO has worked together with Ma’an to support projects that promote freedom of expression, access to information and development of Palestinian society. Ma’an is expressing deep concern about the detention of Mr. Jared Malsin, a U.S. citizen, at the Ben Gurion International airport and the plans to deport him. (sw)
17. Cape Cod March in Solidarity with Gaza, Eastham, MA, reported by Bruce Taub, e-mail
On a cold day in January, fifty people gather at the Nauset Lighthouse in Eastham, Massachusetts to march in solidarity with the 1.5 million imprisoned people of Gaza and with the 1,400 Gaza Freedom marchers who travelled from all corners of the globe to Egypt in late December in an effort to break the blockade of Gaza. Those gathered are members and friends of Cape Codders for Peace and Justice, the Women’s International League for Peace and Freedom, the Jewish Voice for Peace, the Progressive Democrats of America.
18. from Haartz, “Israel’s Compassion in Haiti can’t hide our ugly face in Gaza,” by Akiva Eldar, sent by Sol Salbe in his Middle East News Service
But the remarkable identification with the victims of the terrible tragedy in distant Haiti only underscores the indifference to the ongoing suffering of the people of Gaza. Only a little more than an hour’s drive from the offices of Israel’s major newspapers…
20. “Israel Withholding NGO Employees’ Work Permits,” by Amira Hass, Haaretz
The Interior Ministry has stopped granting work permits to foreign nationals working in most international nongovernmental organizations operating in the Palestinian territories, including East Jerusalem, Haaretz has learned…. Organizations affected by the apparent policy change include Oxfan, Save the Children, Doctors without Borders, Terre des Hommes, Handicap International and the Religious Society of Friends (a Quaker organization). 27. "Holocaust rememberance is a boon for Israeli propaganda," by Gideon Levy, columnist for Haaretz, sent by Dorothy Zellner: "Just when you thought the world was going down the tube and just when we are losing our best people (like Howard Zinn, long may his memory be preserved,) along comes Gideon Levy, the great Israeli columnist.
Israel's bigwigs attacked at dawn on a wide front. The president in Germany, the prime minister with a giant entourage in Poland, the foreign minister in Hugary, his deputy in Slovakia, the culture minister in France, the informatiom minister at the United Nations...They were all there to make florid speeches about the Holocaust...The speeches will soon be forgotten and the depressing reality will remain. Israel will not come out looking good, even after the PR campaign...No rememberance speech will obliterate the xenophobia that has reared its head in Israel, not only on the extreme right, as in Europe, but throughout government.
29. "Israel Signals togher Line on West Bank Protests," by Isabel Kershner, New York Times
Nilin, West Bank--For more than a year, this village has been a focus of weekly protests against the Israeli security barrier, which cuts through its lands. Now, the village appears to be at the center of an intensifying Israeli arrest campaign.

30. “In the West Bank’s stony hills, Palestine is slowly dying,” by Robert Fisk, independent news
In the richest of the Occupied lands, Israeli bureaucracy is driving Palestinians out of their homes. Area C doesn’t sound very ominous. A land of stone-sprinkled grey hills and soft green valleys, it’s part of the wreckage of the equally wrecked Oslo Agreement, accounting for 60 percent of the Israeli-occupied West Bank that was eventually supposed to banded over to its Palestinian inhabitants…Palestinian houses that cannot be permitted to stand, roofs that must be taken down, wells closed, sewage systems demolished; in one village, I even saw a primitive electrical system in which Palestinians must sink their electrical poles cemented into concrete blocks standing on the surface of the road. To place the poles in the earth would ensure their destruction—no Palestinian can dig a hole more than 40cm below the ground…Along one road, I discovered a series of large concrete blocks erected by the Israeli army in front of Palestinian shacks. ‘Danger—Firing Area” was printed on each in Hebrew, Arabic and English. “Entrance Forbidden.” What are the Palestinians livinghere supposed to do?...Many of the 5,000 souls in Jiftlik have been refugees already, their families fled lands to the west of Jerusalem—in present day Israel—in 1947 and 1948. Their tragedy has not yet ended, of course. What price Palestine? (sw)

(sw).
(sw)
Area C doesn’t sound very ominous.) ??? (sw)
